Los Angeles: Los Angeles Police Department’s Force Investigation Division is investigating an in-custody death which occurred in the 77th Street Regional Jail.

On January 13, 2020, around 10:00 a.m., Police Officer II Philip Gray, Serial No. 42065 and Police Officer II Ryan Nichols, Serial No. 42081, Southeast Area, transported a private person’s arrestee, later identified as Laila Safdari, to 77th Street Regional Jail. Safdari was booked at 77th Street Regional Jail without incident. On January 14, 2020, at 7:10 a.m., Safdari was pronounced dead by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics.

LAPD’s specialized Force Investigation Division responded to the scene and is handling the investigation.
