"77th Street Detectives Investigate Shooting that Left One Dead"
 
Los Angeles: On Saturday, September 29, 2001,at approximately10:20 P.M., 41 year old Kevin Brackins Sr. and two passengers were riding his car eastbound on Manchester Avenue. When Mr. Brackins stopped at the traffic signal at Manchester Avenue and Denker Avenue, unknown suspects drove up along side of them and stopped.
One of the suspects made a gang related statement and, without warning, fired one round at the victims in Mr. Brackins car. Seventeen year-old Kevin Brackins Jr., who was riding in the front passenger seat, sustained a gunshot wound to his upper torso. Mr. Brackins Sr. drove his son to 77th Street Police Station, located at 7600 South Broadway, for assistance. Los Angeles Fire Department Paramedics responded and transported Kevin Brackins Jr. to Martin Luther King Jr. Hospital where he died as the result of his injuries. The other passenger in the victim’s vehicle, a 15 year-old, a friend of the Brackins’ family, was seated in the rear seat and was not injured.
The suspects were last seen in a gold, 4-door, small compact car, possibly a Toyota or Nissan late 80’s or early 90’s and drove away eastbound Manchester Avenue from Denker Avenue.
The motive appears to be gang related. The suspects and weapon remain outstanding.
