DETAILS: In November of 2013, LAPD 77th Area in conjunction with a local non-profit organization, A Chance for Children unveiled its first Little Free Library. Since the inception of the LAPD Little Free Libraries, 25 Libraries have opened throughout LAPD Stations and community centers. The library functions as an educational and outreach tool to children and community members throughout Los Angeles. .

The Little Free Library is a gathering place where neighbors share their favorite literature and stories. In its most basic form, it’s like a shelf full of books where anyone may stop by, pick up a book and bring back another book to share. The library is registered in a national website where community members can locate it online. All books are free for children of all ages and will be listed by age group and reading levels.

Due to the success of the Little Free Libraries at the various LAPD Stations, Mr. Todd Bol, the founder of the Little Free Library program will present Chief Charlie Beck and the LAPD with an additional 25 Little Free Libraries to establish in our communities. The Little Free Library organization will use LAPD as a model for other police stations across the nation for their community outreach efforts.

The Little Free Library has had a positive influence on the community’s quality of life and has provided a place for neighbors to meet and get to know each other through “community in the station programs.” LAPD Cadets will serve as stewards of the library to help teach important life skills, ownership of a project and the importance of community. Additionally, police officers will be involved in providing book-reading programs at the station with local schools.
