Carl's Jr. Restaurant Security Guard Shoots Suspect to Save Victim

Monday, April 12, 1999
On Saturday, April 10, 1999, at approximately 11:30 pm, the victim, a 21 year old Hispanic male and his wife drove into the Carl's JR restaurant located at 500 S Western Avenue. They entered the restaurant, ordered and ate their food.
Upon exiting the location, the victim and his wife were confronted in the parking lot by a group of male Hispanics. Suspect-1 asked the victim if he had a gang affiliation and the victim claimed he did not. The victim and his wife attempted to reenter the location and the victim was struck in the face by Suspects 1 and 2. The victim and his wife entered the location and were followed by Suspects 1 and 2. The security guard inside the location observed the scuffle between the victim and suspects. Suspect-1 stabbed the victim. The security guard ordered the victim and suspect-1 to stop the scuffle. The security guard fired two rounds striking suspect-1 in the back. Suspect-1 stumbled out of the location and was assisted by Suspect-2. Suspects fled in an unknown type vehicle.
Unknown friends took Suspect-1 to Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital where he died from his wounds.
The victim was taken to a local hospital where he is listed in stable condition. The security guard was was not injured. All names of the victim, suspect and security guard are being held pending next of kin notification.
The motive for this incident appears to be gang related as of this time.
