LAPD Joins with Autism Society of America to train Officers

What:
Los Angeles Police Metropolitan Division Officers will receive training on how to recognize and work productively with individuals with Autism. This training is part of the LAPD Autism Awareness Program, a collaborative project with the Autism Society of America – Los Angeles.
The goal of the partnership is to train all officers to recognize the various of forms of Autism, and therefore avoid potential tragedies due to lack of appropriate communication. Training is conducted by LAPD Mental Evaluation Unit personnel teamed with experts from the Autism Society of America – Los Angeles, and at times, individuals with Autism. At this particular roll call, Police Commission President Anthony Pacheco, who is one of the trainers, will join the team.
The training materials for this program have been developed by award-winning author Emily Iland, who is also the Secretary of the Autism Society of America – Los Angeles.
