Media Arrangements for Memorial Service Honoring the 49th Los Angeles Chief of Police Daryl F. Gates

A nondenominational memorial service and honors ceremony for former Los Angeles Police Department Chief Daryl F. Gates.

WHEN:
Tuesday, April 27, 2010
9 a.m.- Private memorial service commences inside the Cathedral of Our Lady of Angels Honors ceremony immediately follows service outdoors in Cathedral Plaza

DETAILS:
The walking procession will begin at the plaza of the LAPD Administration Building at 100 W. First Street at 8:35 a.m.  Only family members and pre-designated individuals may participate in the walking procession.

To assist the media, LAPD Public Information Officers will be on-hand at the PAB plaza area and the cathedral.

Only a pool television crew coordinated by the Radio and Television News Association of Southern California and a still photographer will be allowed inside the cathedral for the funeral service.  Media may cover the funeral service and honors ceremony from media risers in a designated area on the Cathedral Plaza or from the south side of Temple Street across from the Cathedral.

Media Parking will be available on the south side of Temple Street between Hill Street and Grand Avenue, adjacent to the Cathedral.

STREET CLOSURES ON APRIL 27: FUNERAL SERVICES FOR DARYL F. GATES

Los Angeles (April 22, 2010) The City of Los Angeles, Department of Transportation (LADOT) has announced the closure of several streets in the Downtown area before, during and after funeral services and procession for former LAPD Chief Daryl F. Gates. The funeral service will be held at the Los Angeles Cathedral and the procession from Deaton Auditorium at LAPD Headquarters to the Cathedral begins at approximately 8:30 AM on Tuesday, April 27th.

“We mourn the loss of our former Chief of Police. People not participating in Daryl Gates’ funeral service should avoid the area, as some of the streets in Central Business District will experience intermittent closures on Tuesday” said LADOT General Manager Rita L. Robinson.

“Congestion in the area is expected to be heavy in Chinatown and the area East of Grand Avenue during the morning commute hours. We request the public’s patience in using alternative routes and allowing additional travel time during this period” she added. The following is a list of street closures with affected times (see attached map):

Full Closures between 6:30 AM and Noon for funeral service:

• Temple Street between Broadway and Grand Avenue
• Hill Street between Temple and Ord Streets, and all of Hill Place

Local Access Only (Court employees)

• Hill Street between 1st and Temple Streets

Intermittent Temporary Street Closures between 8:00 and 9:00 AM for the procession:

• 1st Street between Main and Hill Streets
• Broadway between 2nd and Judge John Aiso Streets                

Suggested detour routes are as follows:

 To the North         Cesar Chavez
 To the East         Los Angeles Street
 To the South         2nd Street
 To the West         Figueroa Street and Beaudry Avenue
