WHY:
In recognition of Volunteer Appreciation Month, the Los Angeles City Council will honor Los Angeles Police Reserve Officers and a Specialist Community Volunteer in general for their volunteer efforts.

You may not be aware of this but the reserve police officer program is composed of community members whom occupations are interesting when contrasted against being a volunteer reserve police officer. The program consists of doctors, lawyers, actors and the list goes on. In fact, two council members are reserve police officers. Last year, volunteer reserve police officers not including other LAPD volunteers saved the LAPD approximately 4 million dollars.

Reserves are one of the best forms of community policing. They help strengthen the bond between the police and the community because they are uniquely committed to both. They increase the number of officers on patrol; they will help reduce response time and increase the apprehension of those committing crime; and they will free full-time officers assigned to special events such as parades and athletic events to work patrol. We have approximately 396 reserve officers in the LAPD.
