LAPD'S WEB SITE BEGINS ITS SECOND YEAR ON-LINE
August 18, 1999 marks the one-year anniversary of LAPDOnline, the Los Angeles Police Department's official Web site. Since its debut in August 1998, the site has received more than 10 million hits with the Department's organization chart and annual reports among the most frequently down loaded files.
"In the first year since the Web site was introduced, we have more than doubled the amount of information available to our world-wide audience," said Commander David Kalish, spokesperson for the Department. LAPDOnline was introduced with 2,200 pages of facts and figures and currently boasts more than 5,700 pages of information. Another one of the advancements since its introduction is the expanded foreign language program that increases the number of non-english presentations from eight to a total of 15.
Beginning as early as October 1999, the newest addition to the Web site will be the Basic Car Newsletter. This newsletter will feature concise, monthly information from every Basic Car area in the City and will include crime trends, events, crime reduction and quality of life information, as well a number of ways that the community can participate in the Community Policing partnership.
The LAPD Web site was nominated for the 1999 California Cities - Helen Putnam Award, for the use of new technologies that improve City services; and the International Association of Chiefs of Police - Community Policing Award.
LAPDOnline is comprised of nearly 9,000 individual text, photo, sound, and video files. In its entirety, this data represents the largest police department Web site in the world.
Developed with considerable input and cooperation from private and public sector community members, a highly-skilled team of sworn and civilian members of the LAPD completed this project as a result of generous funding from the Crime Prevention Advisory Council of DARE America. Representatives from DARE America were instrumental in forging the innovative partnership with the LAPD, which made this project possible.
