South Bureau Homicide Investigates a Deadly Dispute

LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT
PRESS RELEASE
Monday, August 16, 1999


Date/Time: August 14, 1999/11:00 pm.
Location: 1400 block of East 114th Street
Victim: Kathy Brister, a 42 year old female Black
Suspect: Richard Dawson, a 55 year old male Black

On Saturday, August 14, 1999, family and friends had gathered at the residence of the victim to celebrate her birthday. The gathering was winding down when the victim and suspect, who are girlfriend and boyfriend, became involved in a dispute. For unknown reason, the suspect took out a small caliber handgun and shot the victim. The victim fell onto the floor and the suspect fled out of the apartment. Shortly thereafter the suspect telephoned the 911 operator, told the operator what he had done and gave his location. The suspect then awaited the arrival of Southeast Area Patrol Officers who took the suspect into custody without incident.

The investigative responsibilities have been assigned to South Bureau Homicide Detectives Zambos and Leiker, telephone 213-847-1310.
