Thursday, August 17, 2000

"Thirty-eight Arrested During Rampart Demonstration"

Los Angeles: On August 16, 2000, at approximately 11:30 AM, a protest march/demonstration took place in the Rampart area of Los Angeles. The march culminated in front of Rampart Community Police Station, located at 2710 W Temple Street.

At one point, the crowd of approximately 500 completely blocked the entrance to the police station, denying access to those individuals with legitimate needs for police services.

A Dispersal Order was given with specific instructions to allow for orderly and timely dispersal. Thirty-eight individuals chose to remain in an obvious display of Civil Disobedience and were taken into custody. They were booked for Obstructing or Intimidating Public Agencies or Customers. The arrests were completed without incident.

This Press Release was prepared by Officer Funes, Media Relations Section, 213-485-3586.
