Shooting Suspects Arrested in Hollywood

August 2, 2001

Hollywood: On Thursday, August 2, 2001, at approximately 1:25 p.m., Hollywood Division officers responded to a call of shots fired at 7226 Sunset Boulevard. Upon arrival, they discovered a 41-year-old male, seated in a vehicle. He had sustained numerous gunshot wounds. Los Angeles Fire Department personnel responded and transported the victim to a local hospital, where he subsequently succumbed to his wounds.
Witnesses indicated that they had observed two males talking briefly to the victim on Poinsettia Place, north of Sunset Boulevard. Witnesses then heard numerous shots and observed the suspects fleeing on foot. The victim’s vehicle accelerated south on Poinsettia Place, crossed Sunset Boulevard, crashed into the front window of a restaurant and came to a stop. No other parties were injured in the incident.
A short time later, plainclothes detectives observed a car traveling at a high rate of speed in the area of Poinsettia Place and Hawthorne Avenue. The detectives noted that the occupants matched the description of the suspects from the shooting. When uniformed officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the suspects tried to evade them and eventually crashed in an alley at Delongpre Avenue and Highland Avenue. One suspect fled on foot and the other suspect was taken into custody at the location. He had sustained a broken leg as the result of the collision. A perimeter was set up and the second suspect was arrested as he tried to walk out of the perimeter. Subsequent investigation revealed the second suspect had stolen a set of clothes from a nearby apartment laundry room in an attempt to change his appearance.
The suspects have been identified as Kami Towns, 27 years of age, and Frederick Glenn Grayson, 24 years of age, both from Los Angeles. They are being held without bail for 187 (A) P.C. (Murder). Charges are expected to be filed with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office on Monday, August 9, 2001.
The victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification to his next of kin. The motive for this incident is unknown at this time. Hollywood Homicide is handling the investigation.
