Stray Bullet Killed Woman in Newton Area

Los Angeles: On Sunday, August 5, 2001, at approximately 11:30 p.m., Maria Isabel Villalvazo, 30 years old, was in the living room of her home in the 1600 block of East 48th Place. Several male Hispanic gang members were on the street in front of the house when gunfire erupted between the rival gangs and approximately nine rounds penetrated the walls of the house. The victim sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head.

Immediately after the shooting, all involved parties ran from the location. A semi-automatic rifle and a handgun were recovered in the area. No suspects have been identified and no arrests have been made. In addition to the recovered weapons, two stolen vehicles were recovered in the immediate area, which were possibly utilized by some members in the group.

The investigation is being conducted by Newton Area Homicide Detectives. Anyone with information is asked to call Detectives Flores and Spillane at 323-846-6556 or after hours 323-846-6547.
