Los Angeles: The Los Angeles Police Department's Explorers
Program will graduate 97 explorers on Saturday, August 25, 2001, at 11:00
a.m. The ceremony will take place at the Los Angeles Police Academy
Gymnasium, in Elysian Park, 1880 North Academy Drive, Los Angeles. The
graduating explorers have completed 96 hours of training over a course of 12
consecutive Saturdays. There are 47 males and 50 females in the graduating
class ranging from 14 to 18 years of age. A majority of the explorers are at
risk youth from throughout Los Angeles.
The Law Enforcement Explorers Program began in 1962 and has made a
tremendous impact on young adults throughout the Los Angeles area. Many of
the explorers that graduate from the program, begin a career in law
enforcement and become one of LA's finest.
It is anticipated that over 500 guests will attend the graduation
ceremony. Chief Bernard C. Parks will be a guest speaker and present awards
to the class. Members of the Police Commission and Los Angeles Police
Department Command Staff will be in attendance, as well as special guests
and other dignitaries.
