Los Angeles Police Detectives will hold a press conference to announce the arrest of the suspect in the murder of Doctor Lourdes Unson

Northeast: On April 17, 2001, after Doctor Lourdes Unson failed to arrive for work, the medical clinic sent a representative to her residence, located in the 4400 Los Feliz Boulevard, to conduct a welfare check. When he arrived at the victim’s residence, he observed the front door unlocked and partially open. Upon entering the residence, he observed keys, eyeglasses and a broken fan on the floor. He discovered the victim’s partially clothed body, which had been sexually assaulted and strangled in the bedroom. Robbery-Homicide Division assumed investigative responsibility.

On July 30, 2001, detectives received confirmation that physical evidence found at the scene linked the suspect, 31 year old Jammie Hendrix to the crime. The investigation revealed Mr. Hendrix had moved to Austin, Texas and had pawned several pieces of the victim's jewelry the day the victim was discovered in her apartment. Based on these as well as other evidence, the detectives obtained a murder arrest warrant for the suspect, Jammie Hendrix.

On August 7, 2001, LAPD Detectives McCartin and Mathew conducted a follow-up to Austin, Texas and recovered the victim’s jewelry that Hendrix had pawned. The detectives also learned that Hendrix had returned to Los Angeles.

On August 21, 2001, Detectives McCartin and Mathew obtained information that Mr. Hendrix was staying in a hotel near Fifth Street and San Julian Street in Central Area. The suspect was subsequently arrested and booked for the rape and murder of Doctor Lourdes Unson.

Doctor Lourdes Unson, was 63 years of age at the time of her death. She was raised in the Philippines. She became a medical doctor in 1963 and practiced medicine there until she migrated to the United States in 1977. She studied at several medical schools until she was re-certified as a physician in the United States. Beginning in 1979, she worked for several medical groups over the years and was employed by the All American Medical Group Incorporated with clinics in the Cities of Bell Gardens and South Gate at the time of her death. Doctor Lourdes Unson was single with no children and had planned to retire soon and return to the Philippines to live with her family.
