WHY:
30 inner city children participate in LAPD Fishing Day

A Chance for Children Foundation and Marina Del Rey Anglers (MDRA) in conjunction with the Los Angeles Police Department will host 30 inner city youth, on a guided fishing excursion.  The four hour program is designed to help less fortunate kids simply go fishing. Many kids would love to go fishing, or enjoy other outdoor activities, but their circumstances may not allow them to.  Most of the participants do not have a place to fish or the means to go fishing.  Introducing these well-deserving kids to fishing will be a wonderful experience for them and provide them a memory they will cherish forever.

During this special fishing excursion, Cadets will experience the anglers’ excitement from the tug of a fishing line or delight in the passing of a pod of dolphins.  They will also be educated about our beaches and our ocean and will experience firsthand what an incredible natural resource our ocean is and how it serves as special sanctuary. They will also be taught the importance of being good stewards for our marine environment.  Prior to the boat’s departure the kids will take part in a fun dock clean-up to demonstrate to them how to help promote a healthy marine ecosystem while protecting our environment.

The MDRA Youth Fishing trips are partially funded by government and non-government agency grants. This year’s grant is in association with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Each student will be provided free tackle from MDRA.

Members of the media interested in attending should contact Senior Lead Officer Heidi Stoecklein with the LAPD Youth Programs at 213-486-6090.
