WHY: From Monday, August 7th to Wednesday, August 16, 2017, Los Angeles will host the World Police & Fire Games. More than 8,700 athletes, all active or retired police officers or firefighters, from more than 67 countries will compete in over 65 different sports and disciplines, and draw up to 30,000 spectators.

According to LAPD Chief Charlie Beck, a veteran competitor and athlete in the 2017 Games, “The World Police and Fire Games not only help to promote physical fitness through intense competition, it also builds camaraderie and life-long friendships among first responders. The opportunity to showcase our great city is great, but the fortuity to bring athletes from around the world together with our diverse communities to share in the passion of sport, that’s something special.”

This game will be unique in that two sisters who are both law enforcement officers in the Los Angeles area, LAPD Officer Rachel Evans and LASD Deputy Robin Soukup, will be competing against one another in Women’s Basketball. These sisters not only share a special bond in serving and protecting their communities, they also share a bond in their love of sports, which has brought them both to compete in these Games. As a gesture of a friendly sister and Department rivalry, the sister on the losing end of the basketball game will have to wear the other Department’s jersey and pose for pictures.

Both sisters will be available for interviews and pictures before and after the game. The media is also invited to film the basketball game.

Both the LAPD and LASD highlighted the upcoming basketball game on their Twitter accounts (See attached screenshots)
