Sherman
was born in Los Angeles and raised in the San
Fernando Valley. He attended Cleveland High School and California
State University Northridge (CSUN). While attending CSUN, he was a
Police Student Worker with the Los Angeles Police Department
(LAPD). Prior to becoming a sworn officer, he served four years
active duty in the United States Marine Corps. Commander Sherman is
a second-generation Los Angeles police officer; his father, Glen
Sherman, retired as a Lieutenant in 1980.

In 1985, Commander Sherman joined the LAPD. As a police officer, he
worked as a patrol officer in the Rampart, Devonshire, and
Hollywood Areas. In 1990, he was promoted to Sergeant and worked
Central Area, the Office of Operations, and also completed two
tours of duty in Wilshire Area as a patrol supervisor. In 1997, he
was promoted to Lieutenant. As a Lieutenant, he was assigned to
Rampart Area as a watch commander, and then to Management Services
Division. On April 8, 2001, he was promoted to the rank of Captain.
He has been the Commanding Officer of the Devonshire Operations
Support Division, Devonshire Patrol Division, the Assistant
Commanding Officer of Rampart Area, and the Commanding Officer of
West Valley Area.

In November 2007, then Captain Sherman was named the Area
Commanding Officer of the soon-to-be 21st Area of the LAPD Topanga
Area. During 2008, Commander Sherman headed up the transition team
for Topanga Area and helped identify the personnel, create the
command, and mobilize the community for the LAPD's newest Area
command. On January 4th, 2009, Topanga Area opened her doors and
began operations.

In October 2010, Commander Sherman was appointed as a Commander and
assigned to Operations-Central Bureau as the Assistant Commanding
Officer. Central Bureau oversees all police activity in the five
Area commands around the downtown area of Los Angeles.

In September 2013, Commander Sherman was appointed as the Assistant
Commanding Officer of the Office of Special Operations. In this
role, he oversees Jail Division, Property Division, and Security
Services Division.

In addition to his current function as the Commander to three
Divisions, Commander Sherman represents the LAPD in his role as the
Department Diplomatic Liaison Officer.

Commander Sherman earned a Bachelor's Degree in Business Management
from the University of Phoenix in 1994. Commander Sherman is
married with three adult children and enjoys soccer, travel and
camping.
