Animal Sales Signage Intensifies Enforcement Efforts Multi-Agency Effort to Deter/Prosecute Illegal Animal Sales

What:
News Conference

When:
10:00 am Thursday, October 11, 2012

Where:
Southwest corner of Olympic Boulevard and Maple Avenue; Fashion District Los Angeles, Calif. 90012

Who:
Councilmember Jan Perry, Council District 9
Councilmember Jose Huizar, Council District 14
LAPD Commander Andrew Smith, Commanding Officer, MCG
Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office Representative
Lisa McCurdy, Board of Animal Services Commissioners
Brenda Barnette, L.A. Animal Services
Aimee Gilbreath, Found Animals Foundation
Melya Kaplan, Voice for the Animals

Why:
The recent posting of signage in the Fashion District and at Venice Beach signals intensified enforcement of City laws against illegal animal sales and the new law against purchasing animals in public places.

In August of 2011, the City Council, thanks to the efforts of Councilwoman Jan Perry, voted unanimously to update City law to bar the purchase of live animals on public streets and sidewalks. The new signs remind the public of the law and publicize the associated penalties.

The Los Angeles Police Department, the Department of Animal Services, the City Attorney, Councilmembers Jan Perry and Jose Huizar and key members of L.A.’s humane community will discuss the City’s new enforcement effort against the illegal sales and purchase of animals in public places such as the Downtown Fashion District and Venice Beach.  The heightened enforcement is part of the City’s ongoing strategy to fight animal cruelty and piracy in all its forms.

Join us and meet some of the healthy and fantastic bunnies you can adopt from our City Shelters!
