August 2008

Vol. V, No. 8
Captain's Message

On August 5, 2008, The Los Angeles Police Department and the residents it serves, will be celebrating our fight against crime in Los Angeles.  “National Night Out” will begin at 7:00 PM on 1st and San Pedro Street in Little Tokyo for all downtown residents, businesses, and visiting guests.  Under the stewardship of Chief William J. Bratton, we can all be proud of the work that has been accomplished to reach such a rewarding goal.  During the evening, there will be music, food, and most importantly, the opportunity to meet with your neighbors, and celebrate the unity of combating the community issues that we all face.  Crime is currently at historic lows throughout the city, but we cannot remain satisfied with our progress.  We can do better in many ways-and we intend to strive toward those objectives.

How can you help?  Be involved in your community.  Start a block watch and involve your Senior Lead Officer with community events.  See a quality of life issue in your area?  Call 311.

The city has gone to great lengths to implement this excellent service.  One call and hundreds of city services are at your disposal such as graffiti removal, trash collection and street services.

CPAB

At this time, I would like to encourage all Central residents and business owners to join our LAPD organization known as CPAB, or the Community Police Advisory Board. Your input is very valuable to us and being a member of CPAB provides you with the opportunity to be involved in your neighborhood. The commitment is minimal and the benefits are enormous to both you and the community you will be serving. Contact your Senior Lead Officer at, 213-972-1880 for further information.

As Always, an Open Door

We encourage you to be involved. Our station never closes and we welcome your advice, suggestions and of course, your criticism and compliments. We will continue to “Protect and Serve” in the downtown area and we look forward to serving our residents in the downtown area.

Captain Jodi Wakefield

Basic Car 1A1 covers the communities of Chinatown, Olvera Street, Union Station, William Mead Housing Project, Solano Canyon, Bunker Hill Towers, Music Center and Victor Heights.

Grand Theft Auto

Although Burglary from Motor Vehicle has decreased, Grand Theft Auto is on the rise in the Victor Heights area.  There have been several incidents that involved the Thefts of Honda’s Toyota’s and Acura’s.  Please remember to lock and secure your vehicle prior to going into your house.  Please place all valuables inside your house or in your trunk in which a suspect cannot see it.

Safety Tips

When at home, please do not leave your apartment or house windows opened or partially opened without a window jam.  A suspect can crawl in and do damage to your home or most importantly, serious damage to anyone living inside.

Crime Trends

Property Crimes continue to be problematic for our neighborhoods.  To protect yourself, lock your valuables, or take them with you.  Never leave money or valuables in your car, and if possible, garage your car-particularly at night.  Lock your residence.  During the summer months, it may be tempting to leave your windows open, however, the risk of being burglarized is too high for the benefits.  At night, leave a radio or light on in your closed business area and burglars will tend to be wary in entering without permission.

Neighborhood Watch

If you are interested in starting a Neighborhood Watch in your neighborhood do not hesitate to contact me at the above number.  On every Wednesday, at 6:30 PM, a neighborhood walk begins in front of Bloom’s Store (Hewitt & Traction) and casually meanders throughout the area.  We welcome all walkers-even your dog!

Hello Skid Row.

It is HOT out there, thankfully only as it relates to the weather.  Crime is back on the downtrend.  Please ensure that you drink plenty of water, particularly those that seek the sidewalks as shelter.  I hope you will do all that you can to get into shelter.

Crime Trends

We have had several extremely violent assaults in the area over the past two weeks, particularly behind the Union Rescue Mission, and the area of 5th and San Julian.  If you have any information about the “hows” and “whys” please call me.  You can even call me anonymously.

Problem Solving

I will be working with Jan Perry’s Office to help fix the traffic signal on 6th Street, and San Julian Street.  It is entirely too long.  I will also be trying to red curb a few locations to prevent further parking violations in the San Julian and 6th Street corridors.  Also I will be trying to get pedestrian crossing lights put up at 5th and San Julian Street.

Notable Mentions:

I would like to personally congratulate Wendell Blassingame, who just became the newest member of the Downtown Neighborhood council.  I know he will be a change agent, and a strong representative for the Skid Row Area.  I got your back Wendell!!

COMMUNITY EVENTS

Please support the Skid Row 3 on 3 league. Also “Operation Face Lift” is in full swing.  If you would like to volunteer to help clean up the community with OG and his crew, give me a call and I will connect you to him.

NOTIFICATIONS

I will not be referring people to 90 day housing for the next week or two due to the hotels being completely filled.  I apologize for the inconvenience.

JUST A THOUGHT FROM A SKID ROW COP

13 RULES FOR BEING SUCCESFUL AND STRONG FOR LA’s YOUTH
  1. MOST IMPORTANT:  IN EVERYTHING YOU DO REMEMBER TO HONOR FAITH:  In today’s times faith means different things to different people.  Some do not have a particular faith which in itself is a belief system. Yet in every belief system there is a structure that leads to a path to success.  Rely on this to help keep you on the right track.
  2. NEVER PUT ANYTHING INTO YOUR BODY THAT YOU WERE NOT BROUGHT INTO THIS WORLD WITH THAT CAN ALTER YOUR STATE OF BEING. (i.e.  Weed, alcohol or any other illegal substance)
  3. WALK LIKE A KING/QUEEN BE CONFIDENT.   Always keep your head up and walk like you know where you are going.  You can command respect from all men if you walk as if you are above them (But do not treat them as if they are beneath you).
  4. BE THE BEST AT ONE THING AT A TIME INSTEAD OF A NOVICE AT MANY THINGS AT A TIME.  (You will always be remembered for the one thing you are best at.  Not the multitudes of things you are average at)
  5. BE A DOER, NOT A TALKER: Keep you mouth shut about what you plan to do so no one can steal your good ideas.  Plan it well and just get it done.
  6. DO NOT ASSOCIATE WITH KNOWN FAILURES or UNLUCKY PEOPLE:  If you are a winner, and your friends are criminals, pot heads, and gang members, no matter how good you are your friends will be a reflection of you, and their vices could be your downfall.  Or if you surround yourselves with people who have trouble following them wherever they go, their troubles will eventually be your troubles.
  7. SEPARATE YOURSELF FROM LAZY PEOPLE:  If you are a hard worker.  Do not hang around lazy folks, they will slow you down, and make you seem lazy as well while you are carrying them.
  8. SHY AWAY FROM FLATTERY: Many people will tell you how great you are, for self-serving reasons.  The guy or girl that pats you on the back too much is probably just feeling for a place to stab you in it.  Stay humble.
  9. NEVER MIX FRIENDSHIP WITH BUSINESS: Your friends will unintentionally use your friendship to bleed you dry and see no harm done when you are struggling as a result.  Your friends will probably be in a mess as a result of their own doing.  Do not let their problems be your undoing.
  10. DON’T WORRY ABOUT MINOR THINGS: People who worry too much about a spec of sand, are rarely prepared for the boulder coming at them as a result.  Never let minor things shake you.  There are thousands of young men and women in prison because something minor got to them and caused them to lose their freedom in a major way.
  11. THINK WITH YOUR HEAD NOT YOUR HEART: One’s heart should be the catalyst for any worthy or noble cause.  One’s head should be the means to get it done.  Anything run on raw emotion has the potential to destroy you or anyone you desire to help.  Be inspired, but think, plan, then execute.  Many people who think and operate with their hearts alone repeatedly experiences heartbreak.
  12. LOVE PEOPLE.  BUT NEVER BE A FOOL FOR PEOPLE.  There are some people you cannot help, no matter how hard you try.  When all hell breaks loose upon you from helping repeat offenders at failure, I guarantee most of these folks will be nowhere to be found when you need it.  Help those who want to be helped.  Create the environment for those thinking about help.  Stay away from those that clearly do not want or deserve help.
  13. (VERY IMPORTANT) LIVE SUPERNATURALLY:  It is perfectly natural for a human being to do the following things – Lie, cheat, steal, get angry, twist the truth, fight, hate, be jealous, use drug to escape stress, and a host of things you all are not old enough to understand.  If you do the opposite of these things, for the most part, you life will be a peaceful, disease free, guilt free journey.  This does not imply that you will not have troubles in life, but your quality of life will be far better than those that give in to the above natural urges.
The above was one of the topics of a prior “Just Like U” session.

Basic Car 1A61 covers the communities of the Entertainment District (Staples Center, Convention Center & L.A. Live), South Park, California Medical Center, the Car Dealership Row and the Washington corridor.

Crime Trends

The 7th St corridor is the main problem this month.  The crimes associated with that area are personal thefts and burglaries.  The burglaries are primarily at the Macy’s Department store or the Rite Aid.  The property taken in the personal thefts include but are not limited to iPod’s, laptop computers, briefcases, cameras, camcorders and suitcases.

To address the burglaries at Macy’s and Rite Aid, we are working with their security departments to emphasize prevention rather than apprehension.

Regarding the personal thefts, we are working to educate the public at meetings that we attend and in articles in the local papers.
