Detectives From Financial Crimes Division
Los Angeles - On Friday, March 16, 2001, detectives from Los Angeles Police Department, Financial Crimes Division, Staged Collision Unit, arrested Attorney Jance Weberman. This arrest was made after the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Elder Abuse Section issued a warrant for Weberman’s arrest, charging him with Conspiracy to Commit Grand Theft from the Elderly.
The crimes, which occurred over a period of fourteen months, were brought to the attention of the police in January 2000. The investigation revealed that an elderly victim had been befriended by Peaches Sophia Uwanawich, also known as Sophia Adams. She and her family members systematically stole money from the victim by means of fraud and deceit. On two separate occasions she lured the victim to a predetermined location where co-conspirators, Charles Bobby Adams and John Buro, were waiting. At these locations the suspects claimed that the victim had hit them with his car while backing from a parking space. To resolve the false medical claims made by the suspects, they took the victim to Attorney Weberman. Together, they defrauded the victim of more than $300,000.00.
Defendants Sophia Uwanawich and Buro have pled guilty to their involvement in these crimes, and are awaiting sentencing. Suspect Charles Bobby Adams is still outstanding. He is described as a male, White, 23 years old, with brown eyes and hair. He is 5 feet, 5 inches tall, and weighs 110 pounds. He has a tattoo on his upper right shoulder. Suspect Adams has also used the name of Michael Lowell.
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Suspect Adams, or other possible victims of similar crimes by these individuals, are urged to contact Detective Vega, LAPD Financial Crimes Division, 213-763-5103 or 213-485-3795.
