LAPD Combines Forces with Community to Keep Guns Off the Streets of LA

LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT
PRESS RELEASE
Wednesday, December 27, 2000

" LAPD Combines Forces With Community to Keep Guns off the Streets of LA"

Los Angeles - On Thursday, December 28, 2000, at 9:30 a.m., the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) will engage in the destruction of approximately 2500 guns, as part of its strategic efforts in gun violence reduction, as we move forward in our relentless pursuit to ensure for the safety and security of the people of the Los Angeles community.

Of particular importance is the fact that the Department's efforts in this arena are community-based. In attendance at this event will be representatives of the Didi Hirsch Community Mental Health Center. The Center was recently involved in the planning and orchestration of a Gun Buy-Back event, here in the City of Los Angeles.

Also present at this event will be Niko and Theo Milonopoulos, Co-Founders of Kidz Voice-LA and Mary Leigh Blek, National President, Million Mom March. The event will be chaired by Acting Chief of Police, Los Angeles Police Department Deputy Chief Martin Pomeroy.

These weapons will be destroyed at TAMCO Steel, located at 12459 Arrow Highway in the City of Rancho Cucamonga. The molten material will be used for making rebar. Ironically, TAMCO Steel is the major rebar supplier for the Alameda Rail Corridor Project.

Accommodations will be made for members of the media wishing to cover this event.
