Pedestrian Killed By Hit & Run Vehicle

"Pedestrian Killed By Hit & Run Vehicle"

Los Angeles: On Monday, December 9, 2002, at approximately 5:00 a.m., a fatal, auto vs. pedestrian traffic collision occurred at the intersection of Vermont Avenue and 80th Street in 77th Street Area.

The collision occurred when the deceased, Mossie Lee Williams, 73 years of Los Angeles, attempted to walk across Vermont Avenue at 80th Street. It is unknown if Williams was walking eastbound or westbound at the intersection when she was struck by a unknown vehicle traveling southbound on Vermont Avenue. After striking Williams, the driver of the unknown vehicle continued southbound on Vermont leaving Williams lying on the roadway. In doing so, the driver failed to stop, render aid, or notify emergency personnel. Shortly thereafter, a 1979 Buick Regal, which was being driven by a 75 year-old man was traveling southbound on Vermont Avenue approaching the intersection at 80th Street. Unaware that Williams’ body was lying in the roadway, the Buick ran over Williams’ body. The driver stopped his vehicle and remained at scene.

Los Angeles Fire Department Paramedics responded to the scene, and pronounced Williams dead at the location. Police officers from 77th Street Area and South Traffic Division also responded and were unable to locate the hit and run vehicle or any witnesses to the collision. Detectives from South Traffic Division responded to the location and coordinated the follow-up investigation.

Anyone with additional information regarding this collision is urged to contact South Traffic Detectives at 323-290-6063. On weekends and during off-hours, call the 24-hour toll free number at the Detective Information Desk,
1-877-LAWFULL, 1-877-529-3855.

This press release was prepared by Public Information Officer Jason Lee, Media Relation Section, 213-485-3586.
