Los Angeles:  The Los Angeles Police Department is phasing out the Megan's Law computers, which were located in each police station lobby.  Members of the public are being directed to access the same information from their homes, or at the 71 Los Angeles city public libraries, by going to a new web site:  www.meganslaw.ca.gov.

The police station computers were made obsolete by a recent State Assembly Bill, 1323, which gave wider access to the public on registered sex offenders.

"Prior to the law change, police departments were required to keep records of persons who accessed the Megan's Law computers at the police stations," said LAPD spokesman Lieutenant Paul Vernon.  "Now the public will have easier access from their homes.  When it comes to registered sex offenders, forewarned is forearmed."
