Celebrate New Year's Eve Safely Don't Shoot Into the Air

When:
Friday, December 30, 2005, 11:00 a.m.

Where:
Los Angeles County Sheriff's Century Station
Kenneth Hahn Auditorium
11703 South Alameda Street
Lynwood (Thomas Guide Page  704-J-7)

Who:
Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa
William J. Bratton, Chief of Police
Sheriff Leroy D. Baca

Why:
Every year a significant number of people throughout Los Angeles County engage in the extremely dangerous practice of discharging firearms into the air to celebrate New Years Eve.   As a result, there are tragic stories about people who are seriously injured or killed as the bullets fall to earth.

Both Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department have joined forces, to make a significant impact on this problem. A series of public service announcements (PSA), featuring Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa have been supplied to local TV stations to share with viewers.

Additional:
For a copy of the PSA please call Media Relations Sections at 213-485-3586.
