New Year's Weekend DUI Enforcement

What:
News Conference

When:
Friday, December 29, 2006
5:00 P.M.

Where:
6240 Sylmar Avenue
Van Nuy, CA 91401

Who:
Councilmember Wendy Greuel, Chair Transportation Safety Committee
Deputy Chief Michel Moore, Commanding Officer, Operations- Valley Bureau
Captain Ronald Marbrey, Commanding Officer, Valley Traffic Division
Detective William Bustos, Officer In Charge, Valley Traffic Detectives
Mr. Nick Blaire, Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD)

Why:
Los Angeles Police Officers arrested 12,943 DUI drivers during 2005. During the same time period there were 2,583 collisions involving DUI drivers. One hundred nineteen DUI victims were either seriously injured or killed in the City of Los Angeles.

Alcohol and drugs affect judgment, reaction time, concentration, vision, and play a major role in fatal traffic collisions. Everyone is at risk, including you, your family and friends. Driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs is not an accident. It is a choice, and it is against the law.

This New Year's weekend there will be a "zero tolerance" posture towards
intoxicated drivers and traffic collisions. The Los Angeles Police Department
wants everyone to celebrate this New Year's weekend responsibly to avoid
becoming a DUI statistic.

If you became intoxicated:
•Do not get behind the wheel of a car or motorcycle.
•Use a designated driver.
•Use public transportation.
•Do not welcome the New Year in jail.
•Do not let the LAPD be your designated driver.
