Chief Parks Invites FBI to Join Rampart Probe
Los Angeles - On Wednesday, February 23, 2000, Chief of Police, Bernard C. Parks invited the U.S. Attorney's office and the F.B.I. to join with the Department in the ongoing Rampart investigation. Although the LAPD will remain the lead agency, participation by independent Federal representatives on the Corruption Task Force will enhance the investigative and prosecutorial efforts. The Chief, Mayor Richard Riordan, U.S. Attorney Alejandro Mayorkas, and Assistant Director-In-Charge of the F.B.I., James DeSarno announced the new partnership.
Also present was Gil Garcetti, Los Angeles County District Attorney. The Department has reached a critical stage in the investigation where it is appropriate to involve Federal investigators and prosecutors. "The FBI will bring the additional independent resources needed to the investigation," said Chief Parks.
