Los Angeles - On Monday, February 19, 2001 Detective
Support Division, Fugitive Warrant Section received a request from Rabum
County Sheriff's Office (Georgia) to locate and arrest Roger Dale Hayes. An
arrest warrant for Hayes was put into NCIC. Detectives from Fugitive Warrant
Section responded from their homes and began working on the clues provided
by Rabum County Sheriff's Office.
Roger Dale Hayes escaped from the Stephens County Jail
(Georgia) on Saturday, February 10, 2001. The jailers last saw Hayes at 9:00
p.m. Hayes alleged that he was sick and the guards had taken him to the
shower. Several other guards heard a commotion in the rear of the jail, and
went to investigate. Upon their return to the shower facility, Hayes had
disappeared. Authorities believed that he might have stolen a 1991 white
Chevrolet pickup truck upon his escape. Hayes was then seen in Montgomery,
Alabama the day after his escape.
Hayes was being held in jail pending a death penalty trial
for the killing of his father and stepmother in their Rabum County, Georgia,
home. The trial was scheduled for next month.
On February 20, 2001, at approximately 12:00 a.m.,
detectives had established surveillance on the Frontier Hotel, located at
111 West 5th Street, Los Angeles. Based on the information made
from follow up investigations, at approximately 7:20 a.m., detectives with
the assistance of Central patrol officers took Hayes into custody without
incident (booking # 6777329).
Hayes will be arraigned on February 21, 2001 in Division #30
at the Criminal Courts Building, 210 West Temple Street, Los Angeles.
