"99 Cents Mini-Mart Owner Shot and Critically Injured"

Los Angeles - On Saturday, February 24, 2001, at approximately 7:10 p.m., 77th Street Area Community Police Officers responded to a radio call of an "Assault with a Deadly Weapon/Shots Fired Ambulance en route" at the 99 Cents Mini-Mart located on the 6600 block of South Hoover Street. Upon arrival, they discovered the 41 year-old owner of the Mini Mart, Numa Chacon, lying on the floor behind the counter with apparent gunshot wounds to his upper torso. Los Angeles Fire Department responded and transported Chacon to a local hospital, where he is listed in critical condition.

The motive for the shooting is unknown at this time and the suspect or suspects and weapon remain outstanding.
