" Homicide Detectives Search For Murder Suspects"
Los Angeles:
Northeast Homicide Detectives are investigating the shooting death of 27
year-old, Mario Varelas.
On February 17, 2003, at approximately 2:30 a.m., Northeast Area officers
with the assistance of Rampart Area officers, responded to a radio call of
an Assault with a Deadly Weapon, in the 1900 block of West Sunset Blvd. Upon
arrival, officers discovered the victim in the front passenger seat of a
vehicle that had been riddled by gunfire. Mr. Varelas had sustained numerous
gunshot wounds.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the victim and a companion
were driving in the area of Echo Park Avenue and Montana Street when they
were approached by two male, Hispanics one of which asked "Where you from."
The victims attempted to flee as the suspects opened fire on them. The
victims drove to the 1900 block of West Sunset Boulevard and summoned the
police.
Mr. Varelas was transported to a local hospital where he died as a result
of his injuries.
The shooting suspects and the motive for the shooting are unknown at this
time.
