Suspect Shot Trying to Disarm Officer

Los Angeles: A Los Angeles Police Department officer, patrolling in Tujunga, shot a man during a struggle, in which the man tried to take the officer's gun.

At about 11:50 PM, February 26, 2006, Officer Robert Grant, 43, and his partner, attempted to detain a red Mercury Topaz. The car accelerated away from the officers and collided with a wall, causing minor damage.

The driver, Adrian Scott Morgan, 34, immediately confronted Officer Grant outside the car. Morgan and Grant struggled in a confined space between two parked cars. During the struggle, Morgan grabbed Officer Grant's gun. As the two fought for the gun, Morgan was shot in the leg and taken into custody.

Morgan was taken to Holy Cross Hospital and kept overnight. He was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer.

A passenger in Morgan's car was detained and questioned by investigators. Officers found narcotics in the car, as well as a knife.

Officer Grant sustained abrasions and contusions from the fight, but was otherwise unharmed. He was also treated at Holy Cross Hospital. Grant has been with LAPD for 17 years and is assigned to the Foothill Police Station.

Representatives from the Inspector General’s office and the District Attorney's office were present at the crime scene. Force Investigation Division will conduct the shooting investigation.
