"Attempt Murder on a Police Officer"

Sylmar – On Thursday, March 15, 2001, at approximately 11:55 p.m., two Foothill Area patrol officers were driving on San Fernando Road approaching Paxton Street, when they heard multiple gunshots. The officers turned towards the sound of the gunfire and observed a male Hispanic run from a parked vehicle and hide in the immediate area. Officers then requested additional units. A search of the area resulted in the apprehension of the suspect.
Officers located a handgun a short distance from where the suspect was hiding. The search also revealed several ammunition casings on the ground and inside the vehicle where the suspect was first seen.
Further investigation revealed that several parked vehicles in the area had been struck by gunfire. The trajectory of the bullets suggested that the officers were the target.
The suspect has been identified as Juan Carlos Reyes, age 26, a documented gang member. He was booked for Attempt Murder on a Police Officer, at Foothill Community Police Station, and bail was set at $500,000.
