Juvenile Impact Program Graduation

 

What:
The Los Angeles Police Department will hold a ceremony for the ninth graduating class of the Juvenile Impact Program.

When:
Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at 6:30 P.M.

Where:
Harbor Area Shooting Range, Ryan Pitman Hall 2981 North Gaffey Street.

Los Angeles: Officers of the Harbor Area Community Police Station will be holding a graduation ceremony for the ninth graduating class of the Juvenile Impact Program.

The Juvenile Impact Program, a youth intervention program, was implemented three years ago. The program subjects youth that have been convicted of minor offences by the Juvenile Courts to seven, eight hours classes. Parents must also attend parenting classes offered by the Program. The program is also open to volunteer participants.

The Program’s curriculum consists of classroom instruction on Life Studies; Anger Management, Conflict Resolution, and Decision-Making. Volunteer counselors, expert in these fields, conduct the classes. As part of the Physical Training (PT) portion of the Program, juvenile participants undergo a free medical examination, compliments of Kaiser Permanente Hospital, Volunteer U S Air Force drill personnel conduct the PT. The Program’s participants conduct marching drills as well as physical training exercises, similar to the Armed Forces Basic Training (Boot Camp).

The Juvenile Impact Program serves as an example of a community committed to resolve one of today's most serious problems; juvenile crime.

The 52 members of the Program’s ninth graduating class will receive a Certificate of Completion from Councilmember Janice Hahn’s office. Harbor Area Captain Andrew Smith will officiate the graduation. Commander Jorge Gascon will be the guest of honor at the ceremony.
