David Andrew Hanczuk, Captain I David Andrew Hanczuk
Captain I
Criminal Investigation Division, Internal Affairs Group

Captain Hanczuk was born in South America in 1958.  At a young age, he and his family emigrated from Argentina to the United States.  His family made Chicago their new home, which is where he spent his teenage years.  He attended Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois, where he was a double major in Communications and Christian Education, graduating in 1982.  He furthered his education at Azusa Pacific University, where he obtained his master’s degree in Theology and Ethics in May of 2008.

Captain Hanczuk joined the Department in September of 1984.  He worked as a patrol and training officer at the Rampart station until 1991, at which time he transferred to the Human Relations Unit at the Elysian Park Academy.  There, he worked as an instructor and provided both in-service training and recruit training in a variety of topics, such as diversity in the workplace, domestic violence, and preventing sexual harassment in the workplace.  He was promoted to sergeant in 1998, which led to his assignment as a supervisor at the Van Nuys station and the Northeast station.  In 2000, he was assigned to the Professional Standards Bureau’s Advocate Section and represented the Department and the Chief of Police at Board of Rights hearings.  After promoting to Lieutenant in 2004, he worked as the watch commander and district lieutenant at Southeast Area.  In 2006, he came to TEAMS II Development Bureau and diligently carried out his assignment as both the adjutant and the assistant officer-in-charge.  Under his watch, he supervised the TEAMS II staff and ensured that the Department met the mandates of the Consent Decree.

Captain Hanczuk married his college sweetheart, Carol Ann, in 1983. She was a strong supporter of his career with the LAPD.  Carol Ann passed away in September of 2001 after a long battle with cancer.  Then in 2004 Captain Hanczuk met his current wife, Helen.  LAPD has been part of their life since they met.  The two were married at the Elysian Park Academy’s rock garden in June of 2006.

Captain Hanczuk looks forward to his new command at the Southeast Area.
