4:00 p.m.

WHERE:

Los Angeles, CA 90023

WHO:
LAPD First Assistant Chief Jim McDonnell
Family of Police Officer Randy Simmons
LAPD Centurions Football Team

WHY:
Since 1978, the LAPD Centurions have been "playing football for kids." This unique fraternity of Los Angeles Police Officers practice, play, and travel on their off-duty time to raise money for the Blind Childrens' Center of Los Angeles.

This year, the Centurions are dedicating the 2008 season to SWAT Officer Randy Simmons who played for the team for over 10 years during the 1980s and 1990s.

During the Centurions first home game of the season, the team will be wearing Officer Simmons’ jersey number, "17", on their helmets and will formally retire his football jersey during the half-time presentation. In addition, all proceeds from this game will be donated to the Simmons family.

The Centurions are one of 20 law enforcement and public safety football teams that travel nationwide to play football and raise money for charity. The LAPD Centurions are proud to be a part of this organization that put so much emphasis on giving back to the community.
