A year-to-date review of Hollywood Area crime statistics indicated that there was a 17% reduction in violent crimes and a 16% reduction in property crimes, with an overall Part I crime reduction of 16% from 2007 to 2008. This trend has contributed to an impressive and unprecedented 32% reduction in crime for the past four years, from January 2003 to January 2007.
As the majority of crimes being reported are property related, and considering the aforementioned statistics, it can be concluded that the community is taking a proactive stance and taking preventive measures to reduce the incidence of becoming a victim. The Hollywood Area community has made tremendous efforts to ensure that their residences and businesses are secured, that their vehicles are locked, and items of value are placed out of sight. The community also continues combating crime by reporting suspicious people and activities.
To further assist with crime prevention, you are encouraged to become involved in local community activities, such as joining your local block club, where you can discuss community issues with Hollywood Area Senior Lead Officers. For questions regarding block clubs, or to contact your senior lead officer, please call the Hollywood Area Community Relations Office, at 213-485-4316. Additional information may be found online at www.LAPDonline.org.
Hollywood Area also welcomes Captain Beatrice "Bea" Girmala as the new Patrol Division Commanding Officer. Captain Girmala is a 22-year veteran with the Department and was appointed to the rank of captain in April 2007. She was previously assigned to Devonshire Patrol Division.
Captain Girmala has vast knowledge of Hollywood Area and its complexities, having been assigned to Hollywood Area as a sergeant for four years, and a police office for eight years. Her knowledge and experience will continue to benefit Hollywood area as former Hollywood Patrol Captain Thomas Brascia departs for promotion at Internal Affairs Division. Captain Brascia contributed greatly to reduce the fear and incidence of crime in Hollywood and we wish him the best of luck in his new command.

The summer months coming up bring an increase of all types of activities in the Hollywood Area. More patrons than ever visit the Hollywood Area during this time than at any other time of the year. Along with the increase of visitors there is also an increase of criminal activity. We see this quite often in residential burglaries, vehicle break-ins, and reports of valet theft from vehicles. Please be mindful of belongings left in plain view when you park your cars. Ipods, cell phones, etc… are very desirable for thieves to steal since they can turn around and sell them quickly. All items of value should be taken with you when you turn your car over to the valet. Keeping these tips in mind should make your time here in Hollywood for yourself, family and friends, a nice one.

Hollywood Division currently has an 18.1% reduction in Part 1 crime (Homicide, Rape, Robbery, Aggravated Assaults, Burglary, Auto Theft, Burglary From Motor Vehicle and Personal Theft) year-to-date. We are the second best in the City in all categories. As usual, Burglary from Motor Vehicles is the crime of choice for our hillside neighborhoods. I will say it over and over again, please do not leave anything visible inside you car so the thieves can see it. If there is nothing to see there isn't anything to steal!

Our area of Hollywood can almost be considered a "seasonal" type area when it relates to crime. During the hot summer months, when the kids are out of school (with way too much free time on their hands), and the shopping is at it's peak (when customers tend to leave their belongings in their parked cars) crimes such as vehicle break-ins, etc. go up. We see this also during the holiday season. That's not to say that that crime is non-existent during these cooler, non-eventful months, but rather, that it's slowed down in terms of statistics. So we must still be vigilant in our efforts to ensure that we do not become victims.
With a recent arrest last week, we are confident that the vehicle burglar responsible for the window-smash type of vehicle burglaries that have occurred over the past months is in custody. This should help a lot to restore the security for all concerned folks in the area that have been victimized by the break-ins or concerned that they may be next. Despite this recent arrest however, our focus continues to be an increased awareness and community effort with the police to maintain and further reduce criminal activity.
