Why:
For the first time in 15 years, the LAPD will be rolling out the Reserve Officer Crime Suppression Unit to address special crime problems. The Task Force will initially deploy in Hollywood Division, and future deployments will be made in other Divisions throughout the city.
For the past 60 years, the LAPD has encouraged Los Angeles residents to take an active role in protecting their community by volunteering for the Police Reserve Corps. Today, over 650 citizens are active Reserve Officers. These doctors, artists, pilots, business owners and industrial workers are effective spokespeople in their neighborhoods, providing valuable insight into the community for law enforcement, and a voice for law enforcement into the community. It is truly “community policing,” exemplified by the motto of the program: “To be a Reserve is to be twice a citizen.” What makes the LAPD program even more remarkable is that the exacting standards to become a reserve police officer match those required of full-time officers.
