WHY: A massive mural has brought together an unexpected coalition, from across Los Angeles and two continents, to Hollywood High School on Sunset Boulevard, the location of dozens of memorable movies. The mural is the fruit of a partnership between the Consul General of Israel, the LAPD, famed graffiti artist Don Rimx, the non-profits Artists 4 Israel and Arts Bridging the Gap. The mural is intended to celebrate the diversity of the Hollywood area. Two towering faces gaze at each other with peace, equanimity, affection and perhaps even love. Artist Don Rimx has intentionally left the faces ethnically and racially nondescript, allowing the viewer to see in their depths themselves and their neighbors while using the background to evoke images across the full spectrum of Hollywood’s races, genders, ethnicities, religions and socio-economic groups. Entitled “Unifying Eternities”, the piece places energy above the social constructs that divide us,” says Don Rimx. Not until we realize that, like energy, we are infinite, can we truly unite.” Even before it’s unveiling on Tuesday, Don Rimx’s remarkable work has already brought together the LAPD with street artists, Israeli diplomats with California high school students, and pro-art activists from L.A. with their counterparts in Tel Aviv.
