Police Administrator Steven Johnson was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on August 26, 1953. His family subsequently moved to New York, then Los Angeles, and finally, Tokyo where Mr. Johnson graduated from the American School in Japan. His college education includes a BA in Chemistry from Whittier College and two years of graduate education in Criminalistics at California State University, Los Angeles.
Police Administrator Johnson is the first civilian employee to serve as the Commanding Officer of Scientific Investigation Division. He joined the Department as a Criminalist in 1977. As a Criminalist, he was assigned to the Narcotics Analysis, Trace Evidence, Blood Alcohol, and Toxicology Units. He promoted to Supervising Criminalist in early 1989, Chief Forensic Chemist in late 1989, and Police Administrator in December 2002. Since 1980, Mr. Johnson has been a member of the Department’s Hazardous Chemical Team. His most recent assignment was as Assistant Laboratory Director and Officer in Charge of the Criminalistics Laboratory’s Scientific Analysis Section.
During his first year as Commanding Officer of SID, Mr. Johnson will be heavily involved in a number of major projects. These projects include the Departments implementation of a new countywide Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS), acquisition of a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), expansion of the digital photography program, and participating in the development of the Regional Forensic Science Facility at California State University, Los Angeles.
In his off time, Police Administrator Johnson indulges in his various interests, which include scouting and computer technology. Mr. Johnson maintains membership in numerous professional associations including the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, California Association of Criminalists, Northwest Association of Forensic Sciences, Southwest Association of Forensic Sciences, and the California Association of Crime Laboratory Directors. Additionally, Police Administrator Johnson was a founding member, charter Vice-President, Past President, and member of the Board of Directors of the Clandestine Laboratory Investigating Chemists Association. |
