Commander Sharon Papa is a Commander for the Los Angeles Police Department. She is assigned to Operations Valley Bureau which consists of seven of our geographic area community police stations, serving a population of approximately 1.7 million people.

She previously served as an Assistant Chief of Police to former Chief William J. Bratton for seven years, assigned as the Director of the Office of Support Services. In this capacity, she oversaw the Department's budget and administrative functions, which included Fiscal Operations, Information Technology, Recruitment and Hiring, Motor Transport Division, Property Division, Planning and Research, Behavioral Sciences, and a variety of other support services. Her appointment to the rank of Assistant Chief in February 2003, made City history as she was the first woman to achieve that rank in the Los Angeles Police Department.

Her prior assignments included, Assistant Commanding Officer - Operations Central Bureau; Commanding Officer of Community Affairs Group, where she served as the official Department spokesperson; and, the Department Ombuds Officer.

Commander Papa joined the Los Angeles Police Department in 1997 when the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Police Department was merged with the Los Angeles Police Department. She had served with the MTA Police for almost 17 years. Her assignments there included Uniformed Patrol, Investigations, Recruitment, Training, and Internal Affairs. Most significant was her last assignment at the MTA, when she served as its Chief of Police from 1990 to 1997. Chief Papa's leadership, direction and vision contributed significantly to the successful merger of the MTA and the Los Angeles Police Departments.

She is active in numerous professional and community organizations, and serves on the Boards of several of them. She is currently serving as the President of the Peace Officers Association of Los Angeles County representing local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, as well as private security professionals. She is a frequent guest speaker at colleges, universities, and national and international conferences on a wide range of law enforcement topics.
