K-9 Unit: Scientific Investigation Division

During the latter part of the 1960s and into the 1970s the Los Angeles area experienced a staggering increase in bomb threats and detonations. In 1974, the Los Angeles Police Department's Firearms and Explosives Unit was called upon to respond to 639 reports of suspected devices.

To deal more effectively and economically with this acutely dangerous situation, the Scientific Investigation Division of the Los Angeles Police Department acquired two canines, expert in the detection of explosives. They literally and figuratively were the forerunners of the Department's present roster.
