Victim Killed by Female Friend's Former Boyfriend

LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT
PRESS RELEASE
Monday, January 10, 2000

On Friday, January 7, 2000, at approximately 11:55 P.M., North Hollywood Patrol Officers responded to a "Burglary from Motor Vehicle" radio call in the 11000 block of Archwood Street. Upon arrival the officers observed a male Hispanic run from the scene and enter a 1992 green Acura Legend. They followed the vehicle at a high rate of speed for approximately four blocks and conducted a vehicle stop at Vanowen Street and Ensign Avenue. Officers detained 20 year old Jose Manuel Naranjo and also recovered a .380 caliber semi-automatic handgun from the front seat of the Acura Legend he was driving.

A second radio call of "Shots Fired-Ambulance Assault with a Deadly Weapon" broadcast for response to the same Archwood Street address. Additional officers responded and discovered Martin Santiago, a male Hispanic, 21 years, of North Hollywood, lying in the driveway suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his upper torso. Rescue personnel responded and attempted to revive Santiago but were unsuccessful. Santiago was pronounced dead at the scene.

Further investigation revealed the suspect, Jose Naranjo, had recently separated from his 19-year-old former girlfriend and had also been served with a restraining order to stay away from her. Earlier in the night, Naranjo discovered his former girlfriend with another man, victim Martin Santiago, sitting in a parked car in front of the residences on Archwood Street. Naranjo became enraged and attempted to enter Naranjo's car, then produced a handgun and fired several shots into the car as Santiago attempted to flee.

The former girlfriend was not injured in this confrontation and Naranjo has been booked at Van Nuys jail for murder, Penal Code Section 187.
