Verbal and Physical Argument Results in Shooting Death

"Verbal And Physical Argument Results In Shooting Death"

Panorama City: On Wednesday, January 23, 2001, at approximately 12:30 p.m., Van Nuys Area Patrol Officers responded to a "Shots Fired" investigation at 7930 Van Nuys Boulevard. On arrival, officers found the victim, later identified as Daryl Smith, a 25 year old resident of Arleta, lying in the parking lot. A Los Angeles Fire Department ambulance responded to the scene and transported the victim to an area hospital, where he died as a result of his wounds.

Witness accounts of the incident revealed that the victim and the suspect became involved in a verbal argument that escalated into a physical altercation. The suspect armed himself with a handgun and shot the victim in the upper torso. The suspect left the area and took the weapon with him.

With assistance from witnesses at the scene, the suspect, later identified as Anslem Jones, a 19 year old resident of Panorama City, was thought to be near an apartment complex near Roscoe Boulevard and Willis Avenue. A perimeter was set up and the suspect was subsequently located and arrested without incident. He was booked for murder at Van Nuys Jail.

This investigation is being conducted by Van Nuys Area Homicide Detectives and they can be reached at 818-756-8377.

This press release was prepared by Officer Don Cox, Media Relations Section, 213-485-3586.
