Abandoned Infant Found Dead in Dumpster

Los Angeles: On Tuesday, January 28, 2003, at approximately 5:30 p.m., detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Abused Child Unit responded to the 9700 block of Glasgow Place, Westchester, to investigate the death of a newborn baby girl. The child was discovered in a commercial trash dumpster, in a plastic trashbag.

The cause of death is pending the outcome of the Coroner’s autopsy and there are no leads at this time as to who abandoned the newborn.

The public should be reminded of the Safe Haven Law which allows mothers to leave unwanted newborn babies at any hospital or fire station within 72 hours of delivery. These individuals will not face any criminal consequences.

We are asking for help from the public. If anyone has information regarding this incident, please contact LAPD Abused Child Unit Detectives at 213-485-4220. On weekends and during off-hours, contact the toll free 24-hour number at the Detective Information Desk at 1-877-LAWFULL, 1-877- 529-3855.

This press release was prepared by Officer Jack Richter, Media Relations Section, 213-485-3586.
