Officer Involved Shooting

Los Angeles: On Friday, January 28, 2005, at about 2:40 a.m., Los Angeles Police Department Officers Ralph Campos and Marcelo Sabbatella, both with eight years on the Department, were working Southeast Area patrol. In response to a recent increase of stolen vehicles in the area, they were patrolling in the area of the 800 block of Century Boulevard.

The officers saw someone enter the garage in the rear alley. Officers Campos and Sabbatella knocked on the garage door and identified themselves as Los Angeles Police officers. The knock was answered with two shotgun rounds fired from inside the garage. Officer Campos returned fire and both officers moved to a safe location. The officers contained the garage and called Metropolitan Division's Special Weapons and Tactics Unit and K-9 officers.

The suspects surrendered a few hours later and were taken into custody without incident. There were no injures to the suspects or the officers.

The suspects were identified as Luciano Martinez, a 39 year-old male Hispanic and Antonio Rodriguez, a 42 year-old male Hispanic.

Martinez was arrested and booked for Attempt 187 P.C., Attempt Murder of a Police Officer. Rodriguez was arrested and booked for 11359 H&S, Possession of Marijuana for Sale.

Detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department's Force Investigation Division are investigating the incident.
