Juvenile Suspect Arrested in Connection to Homicide Incident

LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT
PRESS RELEASE
Wednesday, July 21, 1999

On Tuesday, July 20, 1999, at approximately 2:40 a.m., North Hollywood patrol officers responded to a "shots fired" call at Oxnard Street and Laurel Canyon. Upon arrival officers did not find any people at the scene, but they did recover some evidence. Officers attempted to locate the victim(s), but were unsuccessful.

On the same date, at 3:55 a.m., the North Hollywood Watch Commander was notified that were two victims suffering from gunshot wounds at two different local hospitals. One of the victims, identified as 21 year old Albert Tamazian from Van Nuys, was listed in critical condition. At 6:30 a.m. Albert Tamazian died from his injuries during surgery. Albert Tamazian had been shot multiple times in the upper torso.

North Hollywood homicide detectives responded from home and learned that the second gunshot victim was in fact the suspect who shot Albert Tamazian. He received a single gunshot wound to his upper torso and is in stable condition. He has been arrested and booked for murder. His name is being withheld because he is a juvenile.

Moyses Akopyan, a friend of Albert Tamazian, has been arrested and booked for the attempted murder of the juvenile suspect. Detectives are still investigating whether or not Akopyan shot the juvenile in defense of Albert Tamazian.
