Suspect is Shot and Detained by Store Owner

LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT
PRESS RELEASE
Friday, July 30, 1999

On Friday, July 30, 1999, at approximately 3:45pm, North Hollywood Patrol Officers responded to a shooting call at the intersection of Bassett Street and Coldwater Canyon. Officers arrived at the scene and discovered a 15-year-old male, Hispanic, 5' 08", 150 pounds, suffering from a single gunshot wound to the upper torso.

Officers learned that a robbery occurred just down the street at "Jolly Donuts" 12835 Vanowen Ave., North Hollywood. Shop owner Crise Song, male Cambodian, 27 years of age, told the officers that the young man entered his business armed with a gray semi-automatic handgun, jumped over the counter, then pointed the gun at Song's head and demanded money. Song opened the register and backed away while the suspect began removing cash. While the gunman's attention was diverted, Song armed himself with a handgun. Song pointed the gun at the robber and told him to "Freeze". The suspect turned his weapon towards Song and Song fired two shots.

The armed suspect fled the store with an undetermined amount of cash and Song in foot pursuit. Song chased the gunman to the intersection of Bassett Street and Coldwater Canyon where he ordered the robber to lay down on the ground. The gunman complied. Song then summoned bystanders to call police and continued to guard the suspect until police arrived.

The juvenile was transported to a local hospital where he underwent surgery. He is in the Intensive Care Unit, listed in stable but critical condition. No arrests have been made at this time and North Hollywood Detectives are investigating the case.
