"Stepson Attacks and Kills his Father with a Machete"

Los Angeles - On Saturday, July 1, 2000, at approximately 10:15 P.M, Julio Chanta was viciously attacked with a machete by his stepson, Hugo Guevara. Chanta was lying on a couch in his living room located at 1452 West 37th Street in Los Angeles when the attack occurred. The victim's daughter, who unsuccessfully attempted to assist her father in warding off the attack, witnessed the incident. She received several lacerations as she attempted to help her father.

Officers arriving at the scene were directed to a converted garage to the rear of the location where they observed Guevara. He was taken into custody without incident. Officers recovered the weapon and clothing with possible bloodstains from the rear of the residence.

Julio Chanta died as a result of his injuries. His daughter's injuries required stitches.

Southwest Homicide Detectives Jeff Nolte and Pete Razanskas are handling the investigation. Anyone with information regarding this homicide should call
