Shooting of a Brother and Sister in Parking Lot

LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT
PRESS RELEASE
Tuesday, July 18, 2000

"Shooting of a Brother and Sister in Parking Lot"

Los Angeles - On Sunday, July 16th, 2000, at approximately 10:30 p.m., 19 year old Raul Guttierez, and his 16 year old sister, drove to a parking lot located on the northeast corner of La Cienega Boulevard and Guthrie Street. After parking, Raul went into a delicatessen to purchase a soda, while his younger sister waited for him inside their Mercury Tracer. As Raul returned and began to get into his car, he observed a suspect approach the car and begin firing two unknown type handguns at him and his sister. Raul was struck once in the leg, but his sister was stuck several times in the upper body. The suspect then ran to a nearby getaway vehicle, a Chevrolet Camaro, and fled eastbound, followed closely by a possible second suspect vehicle, described only as a black Chevrolet Suburban. The suspect later abandoned the Camaro, and possibly got into the Suburban. The Camaro was determined to be a stolen vehicle.

Raul Guttierez was transported to a local hospital and treated for a gunshot wound to his leg and was released. Unfortunately, Mr. Gutierrez' 16 year old sister died from her gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene of the shooting.

The motive for the homicide and shooting are unknown. The suspect(s) and weapons used during these crimes remain outstanding.

Anyone with information regarding the suspect or this incident should contact Wilshire Operations Support Division at 213-847-3994, Monday through Friday between 6:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. or Wilshire Area Watch Commander at 213-485-4022 during non-business hours.

Prepared by Officer Guillermo Campos, Media Relations Section 213-485-3586.
