Illicit Lab Fire in Devonshire Area

Los Angeles: On Monday, July 16, 2001, at approximately 3:50 a.m., the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a fire and explosion at 20613 Greshan Street in Devonshire Division. Upon arrival, the fire department quickly determined that the origin of the fire was the result of a possible drug lab. The fire was so intense that the residence just east of the location caught fire, damaging the wood trim.

The Los Angeles Police Department, Narcotics Division Clandestine Laboratory Squad responded to the location to conduct the investigative responsibility. The detectives' investigation revealed that several unknown suspects were in the first stages of manufacturing methamphetamine. They were extracting pseudophendrine by using a volatile solvent within the single family residence. The flammable vapors were eventually set off by an ignition source, destroying a majority of the residence. The suspects, stunned by the explosion, were rescued by neighbors and fled the location, whereabouts unknown. The lab paraphernalia and chemicals recovered indicated the methamphetamine lab was capable of producing three to five pounds per cook.

The investigation is on going. Anyone with additional information should contact Detective Rick Gutierrez, Clandestine Lab Squad at 213-473-5481
