Gang-Related Shooting in Van Nuys

"Gang-Related Shooting in Van Nuys"

 

Van Nuys: On Tuesday, July 24, 2001, at approximately 2:20 A.M., Van Nuys patrol officers responded to a "Shots Fired" call at 6744 Woodley Avenue. Upon arrival at the location, Officers found victim #1, Ramon Avila, a male Hispanic, 23 years old, resident of the Van Nuys area suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the upper torso. Avila was taken to a local hospital where later died during surgery. Victim #2, Luis Arellano, a male Hispanic, 18 years old, also a resident of the Van Nuys area was not hit during the shooting.

Arellano stated that he and Avila were standing by the apartment complex when a male Hispanic suspect approached them. The suspect produced a handgun and shot at them multiple times. Detectives believe that this is a gang-related crime. The suspect is only described as a male Hispanic in his 20's.
